"A World of Respect is a compelling acknowledgment of the significance of respect in our world today.”
                        -Hilary Rodham Clinton

In her debut book, A World of Respect, Susanne Slay-Westbrook takes an in-depth look at the issue of respect and the role it plays in today's society. Published in 2001, the nearly 200-page book emphasizes the urgent need to recapture the art of respect for one's self and for others.

The 10 chapters that comprise this book takes a compelling and thought-provoking look at respect in relation to its meaning and how we experience it personally and in our relationships, families, schools, businesses/workplaces, communities, the media and the world.

Readers will find five basic principles to the concept of respect intertwined throughout this book. These principles are:

  • Respect is the “I-Thou” relationship of mutuality and reciprocity. It is love in its highest, purest, most effective form. It is the Golden Rule – do unto others as you would have done unto you.
  • Respect is not fear-based, cannot be demanded, but is freely given, based in positive regard.
  • Respect is a combination of action, attitude, and an open-minded perception of the world, seeing the best in others rather than the worst.
  • Respect is the active ingredient at the center of an individual's morality, integrity, and spirituality.
  • Respect is a basic, pivotal component in the determination between functional and non-functional social systems.

“I work with how people interact with each other and I've found that teaching respect helps diffuse anger and even depression. Prior to the release of this book, I had been counseling people who felt they were not getting the respect they wanted, they did not think themselves worthy of respect or they did not know how to show respect to others. The book, A World of Respect, was born from those experiences.”
